Where the Weekend Went

Happy Monday! After a ridiculously busy week/weekend I finally had a chance to get some rest (via an accidental 5 hour nap...opps) and am ready to attack this week like the obviously predatory butterfly that attacked me last week. True story ya'll, those things are ferocious.

Saturday was the culmination of all afore mentioned busyness as I had the chance to attend some very cool events, the first one being at Behind The Scenes, a great new boutique here in Minneapolis. "Beauty & Brains" featured personal shopping, skin consultations, hair consultations and make-up application. As if that wasn't wonderful enough, the soiree collected donations for Dress for Success, a non-profit that promotes "the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life." Cool store. Great cause. I'm in!

Among these racks I found the PERFECT summer shorts. You'll be seeing them come hot heat time.

So many donations - and the event wasn't even over yet!
Lots of spring spactacularness to choose from.

I was also invited to "Shop, Socialize, and Sip," an event to celebrate the launch of Nardo Wardrobe Consultants website. In addition, there were pieces on display and for sale by the new traveling men's consignment shop, William Park. Though I'm not a "mens" I still like to look - I have a soft spot for menswear, especially menswear done right!

The location. Full of Menswear coolness.
The selection featured many blazers and accessories with unique touches. I enjoyed seeing the little details that made the pieces stand out just the right amount.
Raynardo Williams and Justin Park of William Park                            Some William Park Blazers that were on hand

Premium Diva & Co Jewelry was there with some pieces for the ladies.
And, finally, for a few quick shots of my look for the night:

I opted for some printed pants and a nude heel. I went with black and neutrals to keep it simple and a red lip to add a bit of a kick.

I tried to run back up the escalator to get a better pic, but quickly found out that that's not the greatest idea in a 4 1/2 inch heel....

These were only 2 of many weekend activities. Was yours busy too?

Gotchya!

Here we have me, dressed for sauntering down the street as my platforms meet leaves once a part of the areal landscape of the city perched high on branches- now existing as a tawny carpet covering sidewalks. The sun gleams, failing to heat the air as a brisk breeze gently carries the errant leaves from one place to another, as if they are trying to find the perfect place to rest before the cold winds and heavy snowflakes of winter threaten to take their place as the earth's covering.

Sounds like a lovely fall scene, no?

One problem. It's freakin' spring!! Well supposedly, anyway. Nature kind of lied to us on this one. Oh, nature. You're rude.

I just got punked by the month of April.

Last month there were a rash of 70-80 degree days full of sunshine and blue skies. One might think that the closer actual spring gets, the warmer it would be or, at least, the weather would hold there. Well, one would be wrong. Just all types of wrong.

In between the 30 degree cloudy days, there would be a day when I did not have to dress like it was late fall. I got to dress like it was the middle of fall instead!

I bought this trench a couple of years ago figuring I'd get a lot of use out of it, and I have! Can't go wrong with a good trench people! I've been meaning to change the buttons on it, but I really loved the pop of color the sleeve lining lends to the coat.

Under the coat, I had on one of my fave things in my closet - a vintage blazer. I really like the muted tones and stripes.

Not to worry fantasticans, warm weather is back today - so perhaps I will stop complaining about it. Perhaps.

Has mother nature deceived you too? Come, let's share in each others pain.

Cold & Camo'd

Happy Monday to you. This weekend was pretty cold, so it was definitely jacket weather. A jacket has been on my list of things to get for the chilly weather of spring. Reverting back to a fall or winter parka is not an option I'm willing to visit. I recently got this great camo jacket and I am excited to pair it with all kinds of things - dress it up, dress it down, with sneakers, with pumps, dress it here, there, with a fox, in a box....

I digress.

For my first wearing of the jacket, I went super casual. This was a morning where my cousin called and woke me up at 8:21 a.m. and informed me that I had somewhere to be at 9 a.m. Somewhere it takes me 30 minutes to get to. Needless to say, I got ready in record time (like seriously, I should have called the Guinness World Book or something for that one) and this was the result - casual and even somewhat put together. 'Twas a weekend miracle.

It's camo, but you can still see me. I should ask for my money back because clearly it doesn't work.

I have had these boyfriend jeans for a couple years and am currently in search of an updated, perfect pair. But these are quite comfortable. I love a relaxed, casual look paired with a heel. It says, "I'm totally chill, but I'm also a classy broad."

Mixed silver and gold spiked bracelets with a necklace I am actually wearing backwards. I like finding things that can serve a dual purpose.

This is my cold face. Perhaps this post should have been titled, "Cold & Awkward." Seems fitting.

Well that's it friends. What pieces do you use to stay warm on chilly spring days?

Fresh Perspective: An Interview With Ranosha Coffelt of Style Architects

Ranosha Coffelt  was nice enough to contact me back after I cold tweeted (is that a thing?) her one day. Even though the 140 characters I sent her, which were not enough to adequately explain my purpose for contact but just enough to possibly make me sound like a spammer or creeper, were out of the blue – she thankfully gave me the benefit of the doubt and I was able to set up a meeting to talk with her about her super cool job.

Ranosha is the Wardrobe Styling Coordinator at Minnesota based Style Architects, a lifestyle services company that provides event planning and execution, public relations and branding services, and styling help to business looking to have a polished presentation and image.  They work with everything from interior design companies to couples planning their weddings to fashion magazines  to a myriad of other creative people and services. Sounds awesome right? That’s because it pretty much is.

Ranosha describes her personal style as involving a lot of pattern and color and boho with edge.

As I arrived at the downtown  office and walked through the doors to Style Architects, I was greeted by an open and airy space. Clean lines. No clutter. And a killer view. This alone convinced me it is a cool place to work.

As Ranosha and I sat down in the equally cool conference room, I got to hear a bit about how she got started in the industry:

With a penchant for dressing Barbies (she had a shoe box full of the little shoes. That’s a lot of shoes  ya’ll) and interest in singing, dance and all things creative, Ranosha grew up in Iowa City, Iowa. Though she always had a love for fashion and artistic endeavors, her love for children spurred her to take up a Child Psychology major in College.

You might be asking yourself, “how do you go from child psych to fashion?” Good question! I was very intrigued by what prompted the switch too:

“Growing up I always talked about being a doctor and wanted to do speech pathology and that kind of thing. It sounds crazy now but I saw a movie, a Jennifer Aniston move – I think it’s “Picture Perfect” where she worked for an ad agency- and I saw the movie and I was thinking to myself, “that’s the kind of job I want” in my head, but it felt like I was supposed to be doing child psychology because it was my goal for so long.”

After seeing the type of meetings depicted in the movie, the brainstorming and creative environment, and realizing that’s what she was really passionate about Ranosha thought a switch was in order “If it’s something that I really love,” she said, “ I need to do it because I’ll be doing it forever.”

Do video stores still exist? If they do, apparently you need to rent this.

And thus she switched her major and graduated with a degree in Advertising with an emphasis in Fashion Merchandizing, Design and Production.
Upon graduation, with the job market (especially for creative realm jobs) unfavorable, Ranosha took a job  in the marketing department in Iowa public television for 3 years because it was a good cause and she was able to see what went on behind the scenes there, which interested her. She then moved to Minnesota taking jobs that, while they weren’t exactly what she wanted, she knew she would gain valuable experience.

Eventually, she ended up being an associate stylist for the now defunct Twin Cities Luxury and Fashion magazine where she met Christina Holm-Sandok –beauty editor of the magazine turned president and creative director of Style Architects.  Holm-Sadok began including her help on the freelance photo shoots she did along with other marketing and branding endeavors that were the seeds from which SA grew.

Of her job now Ranosha says, “My job is my perfect dream job…it never feels like work.”

The “blend of the left and right brain” is something Ranosha really enjoys as she gets to use her business savvy and creative aptitude in tandem for her tasks. Finding out what makes clients special and figuring out how to communicate their story while remaining true to them and appealing to others at the same time is one of the challenges of the job she welcomes.

Working in both styling and public relations, I was curious as to what a typical day for her looked like. She shared with me that on this particular day, an interior design firm was having an event in which they were blending furniture and fashion – the models in different design scenarios would be dressed to reflect the period respective surroundings. She had the responsibility of sending out press releases for the event as well as scouting the looks the model would wear. In addition, she is an author of the “stylish person” segment on SA’s blog – constructing questions for the person to be featured. She writes a lot of the blogs and many press releases on the fashion and design side.  Cool and double cool if you ask me. You didn’t, but now you know.

If you’re wondering how you, too can obtain a position like this, Ms Colffelt says that one of the best skills you can have for something of this nature is listening, “The biggest thing I do with wardrobe styling and PR clients is listening – being able to hear what they say and read between the lines as well.”
In addition, going to school for Journalism or studying something in the general area with a writing foundation is helpful. “Grammar is humongous,” she said, “we’re communicating with editors. They get so many stories every day you have to have everything in a clear and concise manner.”
She also stressed the importance of doing internships at any stage of life.  “Things look different before you get in there and find your strengths and you find what your good at. And you might be amazed and love something that you never thought you would."

And so, friends, to conclude I asked Ranosha Coffelt (yes, I whole-named it. This is that important.) the biggest question of all:
What makes you FRESH?
“I love doing wardrobe styling for individuals; I like to make people feel better about themselves and we’ve all had our times that we felt less than worthy, so telling people how wonderful  they are, showing them things about themselves that they wouldn’t normally think is an asset  just makes me really happy.”

In the short time I got to spend with her, I can definitely say she is incredibly nice and welcoming and just a dope person all around.  I love the fact that she got her inspiration to follow her passion through the art of film – a 90s RomCom at that! Inspiration can truly come from anywhere if you let it. She is really following her passion and living her gift.

Does this sound like something you'd like to do? Did you enjoy this feature - would you like to see more of it? Sound off in the comments party peeps!

Envision: Artopia 2012

Hope your Monday was a fun day party peeps! This weekend I attended Envnvision: Artopia - the largest semi-annual fashion show in the Twin Cities. Held at the Graves 601 Hotel (which is a pretty swanky place), Envision featured 9 local designers, 7 jewelry boutiques and designers, and styling by Prima Chic and Erick DeLeon of Modern Day Dapper. It was hosted by the super cool Joan Erakit of The Brown Girl Files

A joint effort between V2, Ignite Models, and City Pages produced the fete  with appearances by some other fantastic folks - one of whom was (and if you follow this blog, you know how much I love these people): Aldo.

They had a table full of goodies from their Rise collection, which is an amalgam of edgy designs for those of you who like to wear something above and beyond your run-of-the-mill heel. I even got to say hey to the Aldo crew...one of whom recognized me because I'm in the store so much. I should be ashamed. I'm not.
Fashionable Aldo crew. Hey ya'll!

For my fashion show look - I went with a little bit of sparkle. It was around-the-way-girl meets downtown summer glam. I just made that up, I don't really know what it was, but I was feeling the summer vibe with a white blazer and shorts. To glam it up for a night out, I rocked a sequin pair. For a little added fun I threw on my graffiti heels, gold hoops and finished it off with bright lips and nails.

I didn't get a good pic of the footwear, but hear is general pic.
via fashionbyhe.com

As for the show itself, it unfolded in two parts: a 30 minute show, a break, and then another show. It was like two shows in one, and I don't know about you, but I enjoy 2 for 1's! *

I appreciated the relationship between fashion and art - as there were mini exhibitions present at the show from some incredibly talented artists . This installment was pretty low key in terms of the venue, format, and some of the looks. I would have liked the looks to be a little more daring - but still a must-attend MN fashion event!

Here are some of my favorite looks from the shows:

Do You Like Work Wear? Me Neither...

For those of us who have the privilege of having regular old 9-5s (or 8-4s or 10-6s or whatever), there's always the conundrum of what exactly to wear and how to incorporate trends. For me, it's because I cannot stand the thought of corporate wear. I don't enjoy it. Nothing in me wants to wear a pants suit. Ever. For any reason. Kudos to those of you who do it every day! I should probably be taking tips from you...

In any case - I am fortunate to have a job that is pretty flexible on work attire. It still has to be appropriate, of course, but I get to be fairly free in my interpenetration of that. Still, it can be a challenge to not go too far one way or the other. If you work in a heavily corporate environment, this may be a little much. Take the suggestions and filter them through your work culture...please don't get written up on account of me - and don't tell 'em it was my fault if you do. I will take this post down and deny, deny, deny!

So, all you hard working ladies - here is my interpenetration of some options for the woman who has to dress for the job, but really doesn't want to:

Trend: Floral

Jacket: Dorothy Perkins, Top: Miss Selfridge, Pants: Aritzia
Earrings: Marc by Marc Jacobs, Bangles: Nordstroms, Bracelet: Aspinal of London, Bangles: Bloomingdales
Shoes: Topshop

We start out fairly toned down, unless you don't call this toned down. I love the muted tones of the color pallet, but it's still a stand-out kind of look. Add the same type of tones with bangles or add bold colors to spice up the look a bit. Also, I used to get all weirded out about mixing metallic - such as silver zippers with gold bracelets - now I love it! Do it subtly and no one will even notice. Or, go bold and if you want to make a statement.

Blazer: Flannels Fashion , Top: John Lewis,  Skirt: Dorothy Perkins
Earrings: JC Penny, Bracelet: Saks Fifth Avenue
Shoes: Mango

This skirt and jacket are quite bold between the print and color. You will definitely not be able to hid in something like this, so you may not want to come in late that day...no sneaking in for you! When you're going this bold with two pieces, obviously everything else stays simple. The top is nice because when you take the jacket off, there is still some interest created there, but not so much that it's super busy against the print. Nice responsible pumps and a subdued bracelet and earrings keep you from looking like you're doing to much. I mean, this look is kind of doing too much already...but in the best possible way!

Blazer: We Like Fashion, Top: Aritzia,  Jeans: Go Jane
Ring: Topshop, Earrings:  Nordstroms, Ring: Boticca, Ring: House of Harlow
Shoes: Nine West

Ok, here you are doing way too much. So if you're not really sure if it's going to fly, I'd suggest leaving this inspiration board alone - stop looking. Just quit! I love the idea of mixing classics like stripes with an updated classic like this floral print. Again, because these two pieces are busy, the rest of everything should be basic, hence the plain top and skinnys (which I'd find a different kind of belt for btw). Ad a pop of color on the ears and stack some rings that play off of the floral idea happening on both hands and voila, you're ready for business! If you are in a creative industry or a very relaxed work place, have at it! If not...see sentance #2...

What do you think? Do you have any tips for folks who don't want to do traditional office wear?

One to Three: Part 2

Here is the second installment of One to Three. You can find the first here. It's wonderful to get added value out of one piece - so if you have leftovers from tailoring a garment, get creative with it! This is what I did with left over fabric from hemming a lovely vintage skirt.

Part 2 - Head wrap / Help me, I'm DIYing! / If You Can't Join 'Em, Beat 'Em?

I decided I really wanted a head wrap with some of the remaining fabric from my skirt. My mother and I took an afternoon and had ourselves a DIY good time. I hadn't used a sewing machine in ages, so I was unnecessarily nervous throughout the whole process. It was really nerve-wracking - and although there was nothing at all at stake, I felt all types of panicky and overly cautions - DIY is not for the faint of heart! The whole time I was sewing I was making the "Eeeee face" (scrunch up your face with worry and say a long e sound. Yup, that's the face.) With my mother's help and soothing tones (mostly I think she was just rolling her eyes or laughing at me) I think it turned out alright.

The Cowles Conservatory - Regis Gardens is a pretty cool place to visit, ya know, if you enjoy plants. I had no idea what any of the plants were as I am not a botanical aficionado by any means, but I am really good at pointing at things and saying, "Those flowers looks cool," and, "Hey, look at that!"
"Hey look at that! Those flowers look cool!" See!

I decided to go pretty simple with the rest of the outfit again. I mean really simple. My turban was making me feel a bit bohemian, so I went with my super wide leg jeans. And when all else fails, there's no shame in wearing a good ole' "beater." You don't have to be super fancy all the time - unless you have a fancy beater- then you win. I don't really like calling them, "beaters," though. There should be another name, like - "sleeveless top not fancy enough to be a tank top top." I think it could catch on...

So there ya have it folks. Come back for Part 3!

Do you think I should put the DIY headwrap tutorial up?

Behind The Hustle

Hey there fantastic people! I wanted to share a favorite site of mine with you. If you've been hanging around for a while, you know I love behind the scenes stories and I love hearing how other creative folks got to where they are and what inspires them. In light of this, I bring you: Behind the Hustle.

This site has all kinds of goodies from all types of people in creative industries in their "Cool People With Cool Jobs" series. If you want to know about a particular career, head over there and just look around. It's a really cool way to explore what goes into different creative endeavors!

This video features super fresh (seriously, check out her stuff) jewelry designer Melody Ehsani, who was headed toward a career in law (even interning at the White House) before realizing her passion and taking a risk for it. Stories where people take risks and make drastic changes from the path they initially chose are my favorite!

Take a listen to her story, her awesome advice, her experience, and her general coolness:

Do you have any dreams that you want to take a risk for?

Art of the Gardening

The weather was so beautiful this weekend, I decided to head over to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. It's this great place in MN that holds the world famous (or at least state famous) "Spoonbridge and Cherry." Everyone was out and about enjoying the sunshine and hanging out, being surrounded by Minneapolis spring in all it's glory and all the art the garden has to offer. In honor of the lovely day in the garden, I wore a garden-esque floral tank and got all lady-like with it. And by "in honor of the lovely day in the garden," I mean I happened to already be wearing this outfit when I decided to go there.

The Sculpture Garden is awesome because most of the sculptures are interactive. You can stand on them, walk through them, and all kinds of coolness. So here I stand on one on a sunny, but slightly chilly and windy day. I thought the lettermans jacket was a nice touch - still lady-ish but with a bit of an unexpected touch.

The space I was in is a cool little place. It's meant to be used for a stage for performance and just somewhere to let your creative juices fly.

In the interest of that, I'm going to make up a little story for you all - full of adventure, intrigue, and general randomness. Please turn off all cell phones and enjoy the show:

There once was a girl. She looked a lot like me. She liked to stand places and stare off into space contemplating important things like how achieve world peace and what she was going to have for lunch later.

The she looked down and thought, "I've got it! The answer must be in my pocket! That's where everything usually is when I can't find it!"

I really was looking for my pocket here and could not find it. I wish I was making that up...

She searched and searched, high and low, near and far....or she just stood there looking perplexed because her pocket had gone missing (that sounds more realistic).

Confused, she completely forgot there was a camera there and just started talking in the middle of picture taken' and walking out of the frame (boy, this chick sounds a lot like me!).

And in the end, she opted to just going back to staring off into space, because that's what she's really good at doing. Conquering the world's problems would have to wait another day...however, in a wonderful twist, she did, in fact, figure out what she wanted for lunch...

The Minneapolis skyline from the garden

Wow, that had me on the edge of my seat!

Do you have a cool place in your city like this?
